Navigating Starbucks

Navigating Starbucks

This post is for Starbucks and coffee lovers everywhere. I have loved Starbucks for a long time. I admit we didn’t always get along though. Through my post adolescent and young adulthood era, I was brainwashed into thinking Starbucks paid Israel to attack Palestine. Yes, my friends, crazy, fake news have been around a long time. I have been working really hard to change that sad fact. My purpose in my work is to change the dialogue of how we communicate about people, events, and situations. Only then can we bring about change in our thinking, our communications, and eventually our community and world in large. When I started working, I fell in love with those logo cups again and I have never stopped “pouring in” the love since then.

I am friends and a follower of many Pakistani celebrities. And one thing I notice is that whenever they travel abroad, they post a picture of a Starbucks drink. Some of you may not know, but there is no Starbucks in Pakistan-a huge loss for them in my opinion. I always feel this vacuum when I travel there. So I get really excited when I see celebrities in stylish clothes sporting a stylish cup of Starbucks while traveling. It makes me think that not everyone is closed-minded and more accepting of differences, no matter what the media says. I rarely support boycott of businesses because beside the business itself, there are hundreds and thousands of employees who get affected by this negativity. So in order to bring the world closer one step at a time, I thought about writing a post on Starbucks and what they have to offer.

It is a little known fact that Starbucks pays for college tuition for its employees. This perk is huge for stressed college students who work and study at the same time. But, Starbucks does great things for communities as well. Participating and donating to charities and coming up with delicious drinks to fight exhaustion is what Starbucks do daily.

What I particularly love about Starbucks is their seasonal drinks. Right now it is summer in California, so they have wonderful tea infused coolers such as tea lemonade or cool matcha tea. However, I really look forward to their fall and winter drinks, which include ingredients such as caramel and peppermint. So whenever you go in and want to order a regular cup of coffee, take a look at the beautifully drawn boards behind the barista and see if anything tickles your fancy instead.

My followers also know that I have stopped drinking dairy milk and instead drink almond mylk. For those followers who are lactose-intolerant or just don’t like that cream taste, can opt for alternative plant-based mylks such as almond and soy. You do have to pay extra for these options (the last time I checked, it was an additional $0.60). If you are worried about calories and want to order skim or non-fat milk, you can do that (free of charge), however, these plant-based mylk drinks are lighter in calories AND have a different, sweet taste.

I am a seasonal coffee drinker. That means that while I enjoy hot steaming cup of mocha’s in the cooler months, I opt for lighter coffee-taste or refreshing iced teas in the hotter months. And let me tell you friends, I feel just as perky. Starbucks has loads of options in their regular menu. There is iced coffee and iced tea (can come in different flavors, just ask). There are also colorful mixed or blended drinks, which I recommend only once in a while because they are LOADED with sugar. You can add whipped cream for extra gooiness, although I feel they taste just as good without this topping. My two favorites are mocha frappuccino and caramel frappuccino. Yum!

For those avid coffee drinkers (think San Franciscan), there are two types of coffees that Starbucks offer. One is the regular dark coffee, which is perfect for those who need a boost in the morning. For those who like a lighter, less roasted taste, can go for the blonde coffees. And like practically anything in Starbucks, you can top them off with whipped cream.

So I tell my followers/readers that go to Starbucks, order a drink, chit-chat with an employee and sit to work (they have free Wi-Fi for customers) or just people watch. Why? Just because it’s these simple joys in life that bring so much joy and happiness to you.

*For those nit-pickers who point that Starbucks is more than than their drinks, you are right. There is an assortment of cakes, pastries, and sandwiches for you to enjoy. I mostly go for the expensive drinks not the food.
