Designer Focus: Tena Durrani
Tena Durrani's designer brand started in 2005 and hasn't backed down since. She is a talented designer who does Pret, Luxury Pret, and bridals for her clients. According to Secret Closet, "her source of inspiration is art and architecture from the ancient Mughal period that defines the roots of our traditions. Her collections are fluid, always changing to ensure individuality and brimming with vibrant, rich colors and embroidery patterns that are extensively sampled to perfection before being used in her designs".
Tena works with a spectrum of fabrics from cottons, lawns, voile, chikan and jacquard, to karandi chiffons, silks, cotton net, French net and other pure materials. She is fond of working with the best fabrics to ensure the longevity of the outfit. Her craftsmanship and embroidered motifs are very "Tena" too. Each collection focuses on an architectural period and although her cuts and silhouette are not that innovative, it is her embroidered motives that stand out and reflect her true genius. Whether it is resham, zardozi, Swarovski and gem work, or just her plain screen prints, her work reflects excellence we expect from years of trial and error.
I had the pleasure of ordering some outfits from Tena Durrani for my brother's wedding. I ordered the Salmon Blush sari and Scarlet Lengha. Both items are vastly different from one another. The sari showcases sequins and pearl work all over and the lengha touts velvet applique work, which is so in fashion these days. As impressed I was with the outfits, it was the professional customer service that finally sold me. I wasn't sure how I would order from Tena internationally so I said a prayer and ordered through her professionally done website. Next day, I got a confirmation and a text on WhatsApp about my order. I was able to get in touch with the team, which greatly alleviated my anxieties about the process, and give my measurements. I don't mean to offend anyone, but the service was by far the best I've gotten from a designer label.
One concern I have is the sizing. Besides the wedding outfits, I ordered a Luxury Pret outfit and two Pret pieces. Most of her items run small. I would recommend getting a bigger size. I am usually a medium, but in her sizing I am a large. Other labels, such as Sania Maskatiya have a medium-large size, which is helpful, but not Tena Durrani. Bad for the ego, but very comfortable.
Her color palette is quite eclectic in her Pret, Luxury Pret, and Formals. However, I notice that in her bridal, she focuses on one color palette per each collection. Her previous collection "Omorose" featured beautiful work, but lacked versatility in terms of colors. She focused on pastels with touches of colors in the dupatta. However, her latest collection "A Rouge Collection" features a lot of vibrant colored outfits. I think she does it intentionally since depending on the customer's choice, they can customize the colors and work of your dress. If it requires extra charges, then we don't like that :(
Tena is the designing force of the company in terms of creative direction. She personally designs every product the company makes & ensures that customized pieces for clients are produced up to her standards. I personally haven't seen her bridal pieces, but what I see in pictures should be enough for any would-be bride to order her dream dress from Tena Durrani. She has pieces ranging from Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 350,000+ so anyone can afford to own a piece of her creation. She works with every budget. I didn't have a budget...ahem... for my outfits, but if you talk to them to alter a design or add more fabric or embroidery somewhere, depending on your price point, they give great suggestions and you can have a customized piece in your hand.
Tena caters to custom orders on her entire line inclusive of her pret pieces. The label caters widely to international orders as well. Her studio is based in Karachi where she is available by appointment. Her studio is very chic and... large. The upstairs is where are Pret and Luxury Pret collection is showcased. There is a bottom floor (which I didn't see :( ) which has the formals and bridal collections and I feel that would be the highlight of the store. International orders can be placed via their eStore and email. Shipping is provided free of cost within Pakistan and at the client's expense internationally.
